Hello peeps! I've been awol but I'm back and at skip=220 in my flist, trying to get reacquainted with what you all are up to. I hope it's all good things. :)
I've just watched the first season of Breaking Bad - wow, it's really good. I can't wait to get caught up on season 2. I'm also trying to finish the stack of depressing movies I got from netflix. My whole queue is basically depressing movies. The only variations seem to be language and year of filming. I just watched La Haine, which I liked, and I've Loved You so Long, which I also liked even though I wasn't fond of the ending.
In general, things are good. Probably the least positive thing is that I've stopped going to the gym and started eating cake (often). I think I just got burnt out on going to the gym. Maybe I will get burnt out on cake, and return to exercise someday soon. One can hope!

Yes, I'm on twitter. Baaah says the sheep. I'm @hellmouse over there, just like I was ages ago on TWoP.
Who else is on? Let me know so I can follow you - unless of course you'd like to be left alone. Feel free to follow me! I'd love to have another way to stay in touch with my friends.

(I know sometimes when people post their thoughts on things like this, they unintentionally offend people, so please know that is not my intention at all. I'm just trying to express what I've been thinking about these past few days. I may do it poorly, but my intentions are good. Earnestness, like sarcasm, is often misinterpreted online.)
I am dreading seeing today's US Weekly, with Lindsay Lohan baring her raw pain for all to see, and mock. She is freely giving people material with which to hate on her. (Literally, freely since US says they didn't pay her).
And honestly, I don't know that so many people really hate her. Many do, of course. But there are many, many more people who just like to hate. Not in an ideological way, but in a "let's make fun of people for our entertainment" way. I'm guilty of it too. It's fun to find the witty turn of phrase, the clever mashup, the hilarious screencap, the funny macro and share it with other people to make people laugh. We want to be amused. People like Lindsay who are so impulsive, emotional and evidently lacking self-preservative instincts, just give the rest of the world an easy target. And with her own words, she gives people ammunition. ( more thoughts )

Idea of the day: Beck, Bono and Bjork record an album and call it "The B-Sides". All the songs begin with B. Guest appearances by Beyonce, etc. Their first song could be titled "Barack" and it would be an impassioned anthem about Iraq (it rhymes!) and peace and stuff. Love, probably.
I am seriously missing pistachio nuts. I haven't had any since Sunday and I'm missing them SO much. I hadn't realized what a habit I'd developed. They are such a good snack in the shell because they're time consuming to eat.
Last night I started rewatching BSG - got through most of the miniseries. That was some excellent TV. One thing that really struck me was how almost all the male actors had put on weight by the end of the series (not so much Baltar and Helo I guess), but none of the women had. Not that it's news, but it shows how strong the pressure is on female actors to have "perfect" bodies. They can't even gain 5-10 pounds over four or five years.
Today I am listening to the songs on my itunes that I have not listened to since 2007. That's what made me think of the "b" idea. Bush was in the group - the song from Dead Things with Spike/Door while Buffy walks morosely through the cemetary. I don't know why I hadn't listened to it in so long. I like it. (eta - now it's playing ice ice baby. hee hee.)
Happy Saturday everyone. I hope you are enjoying your day.

Salmonella in Pistachios Spurs Recall!*
I've been eating so many pistachios lately. And now they've been recalled, reported here in CNN. I guess if I get really bad diarrhea then I should go to the doctor because I might have salmonella poisoning. Yikes. I learned that on the Mayo Clinic site. It's really good for looking up real or imagined illnesses you might have - in my current case, salmonella infection.
Of course I was feeling fine before I read the article and now my stomach is upset. Ha ha.

*All it would take is a comma to make this headline about the San Antonio Spurs basketball team reflecting back on the day they had some bad nuts. Ha ha ha. /is nutty

This started with me thinking about 30 Rock. I've never had to give myself a Heimlich by throwing myself on a chair. I hope I never have to. The other day I thought I was going to choke on a pistachio nut (they are still in my top 5 things in life), but I was able to swallow it. It was still in the shell, and I wondered if that would be a problem. Would it just pass through my system, or would the shell somehow create some sort of intestinal problem?
I did what anyone would do, I turned to google. Well, let me tell you that googling "swallowed nut" does not bring up health-related issues first. In fact, s3xy times are being had by people involving the swallowing of nuts, and those people are sharing their experiences on the web. How kind of them.
But at least the links were well named and described so I did not click on them. I also didn't really find anything to answer my question, but since I am still here and relatively okay, I guess it's all good. Fingers crossed anyway.

Hello my friends, hello. [/neil diamond] I have been meaning to post forever. Let's go with some bullet points to get the party started.
I saw the top of a crocus peeking out of the ground earlier this week. Spring is on its way, even here in New England. I am still watching BSG and The Office, but my new favorite show is "It's me or the dog". I love the trainer. She's awesome - so firm and in control but still genuine and warm. I will have had my car for 10 years this June, and I just hit 50,000 miles two weeks ago. I kind of want a new car, but I think it's pretty clear that I don't really need one. I can't bring myself to watch Wall-E because I think I'll cry. Netflix must think I'm crazy, with how long I keep some movies. I think I am on the verge of becoming a Lilo stan over at ONTD. It's hard to watch all the people posting nasty comments about her, but I know that my own positive comments would be read as trolling. So I don't reply. That community has such groupthink: it's part of what can make it fun, and also what makes it depressing at other times. I don't think Lindsay is perfect by any means, but I don't understand the joy people take in constantly criticizing her, or any other famous person. I know the term Stan derives from the Eminem song, but I love it because it makes me think of the former Soviet, now independent, nations that end in -stan. I picture a Britneystan and a Zefronstan and yes, a Lilostan, right ther next to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, etc. And now, back to vurk.

Angela Kinsey getting divorced? It's from crazydaysandnights via ONTD. Does anyone know if it's true? It's very sad if it's true.

Is anyone in touch with onetwomany or beingboring_? Neither has posted on LJ in quite a while, so I'm out of touch with them. As far as I can recall, neither lived near Melbourne, but I keep thinking of them as I hear news of the horrible fires in Australia. IIRC, onetwomany's husband was a police officer - he might have been called in to help, although I think they were pretty far to the north in Australia. Anyway, the news from down under is so horrific, my heart goes out to all the people and animals whose lives have been or are being destroyed. I don't understand why anyone commits arson. Fire is so lethal, and burn injuries are among the hardest to recover from.

The first picture shows how much that koala is suffering, because contrary to their image, they are not cute and cuddly animals. And the second was once a home and now is nothing.

I just got a brochure for a conference in October that I will not be attending, but I thought I'd look through it. It's for the World Business Forum and its language is very "written for the downturn". The title is: "Courage | Decisiveness | Tenacity - The time is now". There's part of me that just rolls my eyes at stuff like that. Even though now probably is the time for those attributes. Although really, you need them all the time. Anyway.
And of course the speakers are the usual suspects - Jack Welch, T. Boone Pickens (for a moment I thought "the guy from the Grammys?" but no, that's T. Bone Burnett, I think), Gary Hamel and George Lucas. And Michael Phelps. Whose session is titled "High Performance". I'm sure by October his pot smoking episode will have been forgotten, but right now, it's kind of funny to see his big old head above those words in bold type.

Watching the Grammys, I have a question for the Jonas Brothers' fans on my flist. I know y'all are out there, so no hiding. ;) Do they all play instruments, or does the one with straight hair only sing? Joe! That's his name. Does he play an instrument? I thought they gave a good performance with Stevie Wonder.
And a question for the universe, after the Grammys are over, can we please not ever have to hear that Katy Perry song again? Please.
p.s. I really thought ( cut for spoiler, sorry didn't realize it wasn't at the same time everywhere if I spoiled anyone for results )
p.p.s. I would like to be in one of those delayed viewing timezones, come to think of it. I'm sleepy. I don't know if I can make it to the end.

I have just spent two hours reading the new ONTD and the newer ONTD - blast from the past comments! and purple! and listening to the CBale "what don't you f*king understand" remix. My brain is esplodin. So maybe that's why I retreated to the land of lolcats. This one seems perfectly made for one Mr. Dwight K "Danger" Schrute. And it actually kind of works for Senor Bale too.

Insert disclaimer that I am sure this is a ridiculous question.
I have never deleted any of my messages since the message center feature rolled out. I thought it would delete the comment from my journal. I'm guessing that must be wrong. Does anyone know? If you delete the message, does the comment still live in your journal?

I didn't watch the super bowl, and I guess I missed a good game. I was working on tax stuff and had the puppy bowl on in the background - it was adorable. I did tune in for The Office, though. And typed while watching. ( spoilers... )
( more spoilers )
( spoiler for the preview ) When is the next episode on? This Thursday?

As you can see in this youtube video of the US presidents, current and former, in the Oval Office a few weeks ago, Bill Clinton somewhat randomly announced "I love that rug". The video draws its own conclusions by including clips of Monica Lewinsky after the comment, and that's what a lot of people thought.
But, in today's NYT, an article about Obama's work style thus far in the White House mentions that the rug in question was designed under the supervision of Laura Bush. So it wasn't a rug on which Clinton had sexy times with Monica or anyone. It wasn't even there during his tenure. He was probably just being the politician he can't help but be, trying to charm GWB, since evidently, GWB loved to talk about the rug: "Mr. Bush loved to regale visitors with the story of the rug, whose sunburst design, he liked to say, was intended to evoke a feeling of optimism."
A little more research found a site with pictures of the Oval Office rugs of GWB, Clinton, Bush Sr, and Reagan, and a history of Oval Office rugs. How interesting. I didn't know they were different. ~Cue the NBC "the more you know" music.~

Oh no they didn't reached LJ's 16.5 MILLION comment limit and doesn't work anymore. Crazy. LJ is working to fix it, and I hope they do soon, because it is one of the only gossip sites I still let myself go to. I decided for the new year that I would go to fewer gossip sites (also as a way to avoid virus-infested ads and graphics) and ONTD is really the only place I go. What will I do now?
Interesting article on Facebook "unfriending" in today's NYT. Less interesting is how SLOW that site is for me now. Sometimes the little logo just spins and spins while waiting for page 2. So I should tell you that I haven't read page 2 of this article. I am making an assumption that it's interesting. I may be wrong.
The Fug Girls have ideas for saving Ugly Betty - I had never watched the show until Lindsay Lohan guest starred, but I watched those episodes. Honestly, I thought America Ferrara's character was annoying, in particular, her voice is annoying. Which is odd, because I liked her in the Traveling Pants movie. But then the management of Ugly Betty, or someone, put out rumors about LL being late to set and smoking too much and having too many friends on set, and basically saying she's unprofessional, and that made me mad. (My inner Lilo fan has emerged over past year - I guess it was always there, starting with how adorable she was in The Parent Trap) So I find myself feeling a bit gleeful that Ugly Betty is struggling, because perhaps if they'd been nicer to Miss Lohan, they wouldn't be in trouble now. I know, I know, logic is absent from that argument.

At this rate, I will not watch 100 movies this year! Last week I watched Long Way Round, which is sort of cheating on two levels - 1 because I've seen it before and 2 because it's a documentary, not a film. BUT, it's still freaking awesome, so I'm glad I watched it. I love Ewan McGregor even more from having seen him in this documentary. My favorites are the parts in Mongolia and far eastern Russia. I now really want to go to Mongolia, after having seen this show. Someday. Instead of watching movies, I have watched a lot of Intervention. Last night I watched two episodes, Pam and Leslie, both female alcoholics. They were both sad, but wow, the Leslie episode was tough to watch. Anything with young children of active alcoholics is going to be tough to take.
I'm looking forward to the post-superbowl Office except for the fact that it's on after the superbowl. That means it will probably start around 11:00 pm. That's awfully late for me. I didn't write about The Office or BSG episodes from last week, so I will do that now:
( The Office and Battlestar Galactica last week )
It's snowing again today. I say to you skies, enough with the snow! We get it, you know how to make white stuff and drop it on us. But we are all set with the several feet already on the ground. No more for a while, okay?
Finally, have you all seen Stains, the cupcake-loving dog, from The Soup? I laugh every time I watch this. Poor thing, he just wants a cupcake. The clip explains it a bit, but here's a glimpse:

Tomorrow I go to the dentist. I'm not expecting good news. I had tooth pain a few months ago, and one of the solutions was a root canal. I think that's what they're going to confirm tomorrow. I've never had one, so I am already nervous in anticipation. I also am going to need another gum graft, which I've had before and it's not horrible, but there's definitely some unpleasantness associated with the recovery.
I'm so tired today - it's causing me to be short with people. I should have worn heels.
